how important is sleep?

To put it simply, sleep can save your life. That is how important it is. Sleep is needed so everything in your body and mind can work correctly.


The Brain

Without proper sleep, the brain can’t regenerate properly. Sleep and mental health go hand-in-hand. Good sleep is essential for maintaining our baseline mental health, as one night of sleep deprivation can dramatically affect the mood the next day. Chronic exposure to poor sleep quality is associated with depression, anxiety, and other conditions. There are also bidirectional associations—meaning that experiencing anxiety and depression very often affects sleep, which then impacts our ability to cope with the anxiety and depression, and so on.

The Heart

The University of Warwick did a study and they found that getting less than 6 hours of sleep on a continuous basis makes you 48% more likely to die of heart disease and 15% more likely in developing a stroke.



Weight

The reasoning for weight gain is the longer you are awake the hungrier you will become. Your body needs the energy to keep going and if you are staying up long hours, the more energy it will require.

Immune System

Poor sleep reduces the immune system’s efficiency to respond, the response to a new threat will diminish, thus prolonging recovery. Poor sleep also increases ‘immune self-tolerance', which is the ability to differentiate healthy cells from antigens. This can destroy healthy cells and allow antigens to remain active within the body.
